IAM Technique: An Interview

"One IAM. Varied perceptions."

It has affected them differently. If one says it's like muscle training for the mind, the other says it's gratitude that strikes him deeply...

Encompassing profound spiritual truths ever known to mankind, IAM works at many different – conscious, but mostly unconscious – levels of mind. Revealing subtle dimensions of peace and happiness unimaginable before, their enchanting journey into the intricacies of meditation has culminated in subtle metamorphosis of the individual.     

Though each story is different, the common thread is the seemingly intrinsic metamorphosis of the individuals...

Change is a must; it is mathematical. It is an equation between correct understanding of the principles, and a dedicated, regular practice...      

One refrain one hears time and again is, that it is very short; that it is very simple; that anybody can do it; and that it's very easy to practice.

No wonder.

Yekaterina: ...my mind stopped working. I felt it. And …     and my body stopped moving (became still) totally. And in my own meditation, I could not stop (still) my body; and my mind used to be active. But this time, I felt very calm. So I could sit for nine hours in this posture... And it was for a long time, for about nine hours. But when you are sitting here, it looks like one hour.   

Instructor: Nine hours were looking like one hour – you mean to say?. And where did you practice sitting like this? Because, for Westerners it is very difficult to sit on the floor (and) with folded legs.

After a few weeks of practicing IAM I had to deliver a continuous study workshop to a particularly demanding group of participants. Most of them could look back to many years of professional experience.

Teaching in the West is not an easy task. Students will test your professional qualifications as well as your equanimity of mind by asking tricky questions. Some may openly criticize you. Respect is not accorded to teachers just because of their position; rather it must be gained by passing a number of delicate tests. Thus most teachers, especially when starting a new class, will feel somewhat tense. I was no exception.

Knowing that the first "test" from my dear students could arrive anytime, I felt my heart beat as the program began. Needless to say, what was expected arrived. However, what actually happened after a tricky intervention by one student was far beyond my imagination.

Starting from the crown of my head I was showered with a golden light. It built a protective shell around my body and soul that simply deflected the blast. At the same time, a deep peace pervaded my whole being.

I don't remember my specific reaction to the student's test, all I know is that it must have left a deep impression on them. From then on all the participants became extremely cooperative and did everything to make the event a lasting success from which we all profoundly benefited.

I enthusiastically encourage everyone who has done the IAM Meditation course to do a refresher. Here is my reason why I say this.

I had been diligently practicing the meditation every morning and was gaining so much benefit from it. Then life presented some major changes – a death of a beloved, travel through India for three months and then relocation from South Australia to West Australia. The meditation sustained me through all the accompanying mental, emotional and physical challenges. However, and most unwisely, I gradually stopped doing the meditation and by the time we settled into our new lives I was very aware of the loss of that which had helped me so much to stay centered...

… I was surprised and a little dismayed to find that somewhere along the way I had altered the process in small but significant ways. It was so good to come back and correct those mistakes, because I realized that even though the changes were small, they made a big difference to the overall resulting feelings and to the depth of the experience.

Another realization was that at the first course, my mind was very much engaged in getting it all learned, understood and at least partially remembered. At the refresher, the mind was relaxed and I found that I could immerse myself much more deeply into the experience of it.

… At the first course I had been given a beautiful, powerful and clear stone that I loved and used with respect only to find out at the second course that what I thought was a crystal was actually a diamond… I begin to recognize it's true inner beauty and I see now just how powerful it can be when used as it should be.

So again, I do encourage you to repeat the course, it will serve you well. It is also a lot of fun to share sacred space again with like spirited souls. …

The first day was a pure delight. It was like yoga and pilates at a no stress snails pace. A bit like the feeling of Tai Chi except that it was much easier to learn and profoundly more peaceful…

I was eager to see what the second day had in stall for us, and as it turned out was completely different to the first. This instruction was more like "meditation" than the first day, however it was unlike any other meditation technique I'd heard of. I'd tried other techniques before and didn't persist with them because I found it difficult to simply "still" the mind…

I've been practicing the technique for a couple of weeks now and can say that I generally feel better. I don't feel as stressed, stressful situations don't feel anywhere near as bad and I find I'm in a good mood most of the time. Suffice to conclude that I feel happier.

Aside from the outcomes of practicing the technique, attending the course is a pure delight in itself. After attending the first day of the course I felt like I'd been on holidays for a couple of weeks. After the second day I felt like I'd been on leave for a month. My stress levels have stayed down and I attribute that to practicing the technique…

The fact that there is a spiritual side to this meditation is an added bonus for me since I believe that spiritual pursuits are a major component to finding true peace and happiness. I feel privileged to have stumbled across one of life's jewels.

I felt enriched during and after this experience, so much so, when I returned to Melbourne, I went to the website www.amma.org and found information about the organization and noticed that volunteers were required to help build homes for people affected by the December 2004Tsunami. I was so inspired after completing the yoga & meditation weekend with Shanthy, that I decided I wanted to find out more about Amma, and booked a flight to India…

At first I really queried the confidentiality of the practice and felt resistance when I read the instructions that accompanied, in particular the legal jargon which frightened me. It took me several months to understand the reason for maintaining the purity of the practice.

When it became possible to learn IAM again, I KNEW it was right for me. At Mekala's last weekend some of us found that we had indeed missed parts of the technique during the Gold Coast training (although different people missed different bits!). But even in the best of conditions I imagine that it's difficult to maintain 100 per cent concentration all the time, so a refresher course is a valuable opportunity to refine and deepen one's meditation practice.

Shanthy is all we could have hoped for in an instructor...

NOTE: Attendees do not have to be devotees of Amma. Not everyone present at the Brisbane weekend was a devotee. Shanthy takes this into account…
In conclusion, it was a wonderful experience all round, not just for the instruction – although that is of inestimable value – but to get together, share experiences, and know one another better. In the short time since the course, some people have already sent in accounts of feeling the benefit of their meditation practice, both physically and mentally.

An executive at a leading biotechnology firm in the San Francisco Bay area claimed at the end of the IAM for Organizations class that he had never felt so peaceful before in his life. He said he didn't want to stop.

A 70-year old elementary school teacher in Sacramento, CA, who took the IAM for Organizations course in 2009, stated that since taking the course, she now wakes up automatically one half hour earlier each day, giving her the time meditate. She also said that she was much more focused on her work and more patient with her students. (Instructor note: she seemed to be a very patient person to begin with!)
